Anis Syafiqah Mohd Yusof is the eldest of five siblings. She was a student activist and a former student of Language and Linguistics at University Malaya. She led a student movement and organized a rally, #TangkapMO1, aimed at pressuring authorities into taking action against the elusive Malaysian Official 1 (MO1) – the code name mentioned in the United States Department of Justice’s civil suit to recover nearly US$1 billion in 1MDB-linked assets.

Anis was among the people who were questioned by police over the rally under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting. University Malaya found Anis guilty of acting in a manner detrimental and prejudicial to the interests and good reputation of the university; acting in a manner detrimental to public safety; and violating the university’s regulations by organizing and participating in the rally. She was given a six-month suspension and RM400 fine by University Malaya, for her involvement in the #TangkapMO1 rally.

In November 2016, several days before the Bersih 5.0 rally, she was one of eleven individuals arrested by the police under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting. However, she was released two days after the arrest.

During her time in University Malaya, she joined Persatuan Mahasiswa Islam UM. Subsequently, she stood for campus elections and won under the pro-Mahasiswa. Her secondary schooling days were spent learning to memorize the Quran and she later proceeded to earn a diploma in Quranic Studies. Her ambition is to be a lecturer, following in the footsteps of her parents who are both teachers at a primary and a secondary school in Sungai Besar, Selangor.
